The American wiseman of the Founding Fathers, Ben Franklin, once wrote, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." For those of us living today, this famous quote is still true today. In terms of educating our youth, we MUST do a better job! There are quality programs to help those whose parents can afford the high price. However, high quality education should be a universal right, a way for a brighter tomorrow, and a moral good.
Economically speaking, we know that the greatest investment we could ever make is in human capital. Meaning, we must look after our children. We need to make sure they develop in a healthy way. Not only is this beneficial to them in the long run, but also, it is an investment for the caretakers, when they get tired and well advanced in years and are not able to take care of themselves. Hence, making sure every child gets the type of care that is loving and nurturing while growing up could, in fact, ensure that the generation of caretakers are themselves treated with love and care should they not be able to take care of themselves later in life.
Also, if we nurture our youth today, then they can become more self sufficient tomorrow. No better example of this is our prison system. For decades, prisons have been built based off the number of children who fail the third grade! How can we ever sit idly by while OUR CHILDREN suffer and eventually turn into criminal wards of the state? Why are we not using all of our resources to make sure such an atrocity to a generation never happens again? We can and we MUST do better!
Education! Education! Education!!!!
